With the resources available at DETS, and the way we manage the flow of samples through the laboratory, we have confidence in being able to undertake the largest of projects.  If, due to the amount of work already in the laboratory, we are not confident of meeting your required deadline, then we will tell you so.

Staff cross training

The laboratory has a structured training programme enabling chemists and technicians to become proficient in multiple methods.  This flexibility helps the laboratory to cope with unexpected high sample numbers for individual methods.

Duplicate instruments

The laboratory is equipped with multiple examples of all its major instruments enabling it to cope with planned maintenance and unexpected breakdowns. An equipment list is as follows:

  • GCMS liquid injection
  • GCMS headspace
  • GCFID liquid injection
  • GCFID headspace
  • Kone spectrophotometers (for anions)
  • Mercury analyser
  • HPLC systems

Staff are aware of the unpredictable patterns of sample receipt, and accept the need to sometimes work additional hours. This may be using a temporary shift system, staggering existing staff cover to include weekends, or straightforward overtime.
